Olive Dating

Olive dating is ARRSE's dating site, with a huge database of general and uniform fans.  Good, simple to use, excellent feedback where I've found someone to admit it!  Find your soul made / get laid.

ARRSEPedia

What's new in the ARRSEPedia?  Among a good few shorter articles these stood out:

A very good article on the PTI course - thanks to Tango

Bugsy took centre stage with this critical appraisal of his contributions to ARRSE.

"Busy's MO: .........

.... 9) By now you’ve effectively lost 90% of the readers of the thread. There’s still this 10% persisting people trying to reason with you. Start taking the moral high ground by saying you’d never resort to abuse or name calling because it is too easy.....

Jokes

from Civvy-Ginge:

As I was walking home from the pub last night, I was jumped by two blokes.

Even though there were two of them, I still managed to knock one out.

Although in hindsight, it wasn't really the best time to have a wank!

Members - Did you Know?

You can use the site without appearing in the Who's Online List by visiting your account preferences and changing "Show My Online Status"

Not the most exciting "did you know" ever, but heh, someone might like it.
Better late than never - we bring you the November newsletter,

Welcome to the November newsletter.  This month we thought we'd try something different and write a bit more about 'us' - that is the site itself and ARRSE HQ.  There are all sorts of things going on and also we're sure many will have wondered what lays behind the strangely brown pages of ARRSE.

ARRSE and the BNP
by Sixty

The BNP’s own ‘terror of the ladies’ Nick Griffin was in the press last month with his claim that his party was widely supported by the Armed Forces.

Putting this theory to the test, Good CO decided to run a poll here on ARRSE. It was a largely grown up and civilised conversation that followed and the result was that a mighty 6% of ARRSE users stated that if there were to be an election now, they would vote BNP.

This was from a polled figure (to date) of 503 users, one of the highest number of respondents ever to a poll on Arrse.

The NDM
by Fugly

The mention of medals, so poignant at this time of year, brings us on to a debate raging in the Current Affairs then RHQ forums - that of the contentious matter of a possible National Defence Medal for service during the Cold War.

On one side we have various members who believe that the current system we have for medal qualification (i.e. you must actually deploy on an Operation to get one) is just, and those who did not deploy are merely "whining" about having nothing to wear. On the other side are a raft of "Cold War Warriors", who point out that the lengthy years of service and training ready for the possible Soviet invasion is worthy of recognition after all these years. What do you think?

The Nov 11th Auction (cough up if you won and haven't paid, or bid and haven't checked to see if you won)

Our thanks go to those who bid for, or donated lots in the Nov 11th charity auction.  We haven't added it up precisely but somewhere in excess of £5000 was raised for the RBL with another chunk to add to that thanks to the giftaid scheme.

The charity auctions on ARRSE continue of course and the Holidays for Heroes team nornmally have something good on offer.

Soldier On! and ARRSE

ARRSE recently had the pleasure of meeting the key figures behind "SoldierOn!", a new initiative to find employment and career development placements for injured service personnel. "Soldier On!" has some heavyweight backing, including excommander British Forces Afghanistan, Brigadier Ed Butler CBE DSO,and a growing number of major blue chip companies.

What we particularly liked about "Soldier On!" is that it is not offering a free benefit, but instead aims to give that most key part of normal life andself-respect: a job.

We at ARRSE are absolutely convinced that "Soldier On!" is a cause to be fully supported and are proud to announce our involvement with it. We will shortly be inviting all discharged personnel to register with "Soldier On!" via ARRSE and aim to stop injured service personnel 'dropping off the radar' once the discharge process has completed.

It is important to note that "Soldier on!" operates on a non-profit making basis and and is supported by a network of recruitment and headhunting companies specialising in individual sectors. Any profit made is directed back in to more general ex-service recruitment, something the backers are fully committed to already.

20% off Escape from Baghdad for ARRSE Users

Escape from Baghdad is a gripping account of real life and death on the ground in Iraq. Abandoned by the occupying Coalition Forces and at the mercy of the Shia-dominated Iraqi police, Sammy and his family face certain death unless James Ashcroft and his crack team can get in and quickly rescue them.

From secretly acquiring weapons on the black market, to dodging the fearsome death squads that roam the streets, this is the story of a vulnerable family adrift in the chaos of war, where the only thing that can be relied upon is the bond between former brothers-in-arms.

And this time, these guns-for-hire who come with a hefty price-tag aren’t even being paid. This time, it’s personal

To get your 20% off Escape from Baghdad just type in "ARRSE" in the promotion box when you  checkout from www.rbooks.co.uk.  Offer valid until 31 Dec 09.

Olive Net Media and PR

It's a pleasure to welcome PR_Totty to the Olive Net/ARRSE HQ team. PR_Totty will manage all media relations on all of the Olive Net sites, so look out for threads posted by her across the forums, as they will be driving issues, or providing information, generated by media enquiries.

In addition, PR_Totty will be working to raise our profile within the media, issuing press releases, and writing articles, whenever the needs arises.

If you have a media enquiry, or PR opportunity, please contact PR_Totty by emailing, media@olivenet.co.uk

All about ARRSE

For a change we decided to speak a bit about ARRSE itself rather than the usual what's on it.  Skip the next three sections if you don't give a toss what it is as long as it works!

So what's next in ARRSE Development?

Currently we have two projects underway with the developers -  ARRSE for mobile devices and a vastly improved Your Account module.  The latter will bring a well organised and logical account area with records of you posts, gallery images, blogs etc., more user friendly registration, a good password recovery tool and the ability to change your own email address and username.

Additionally the forums will shortly get a major upgrade bringing among many other things the ability to watch forums for new topics or replies.  When?  Well actually getting these new mods installed is my next job after pressing send on this newsletter, so reasonably soon.

Who runs ARRSE?

ARRSE is run mainly from a small office in Exeter.  Olive Net Ltd is the parent company.  This is currently two ex regular officers (one full, one part time), and one pure civilian web developer, the new PR rep and one very part-time server-guru.

If there's a public face of ARRSE HQ it's Good CO.  An ex- infantry Captain, Good CO has the standard NI/Balkans experience of the late 90s, left the Army in 2002 before it turned into a serious job, and then briefly took part in a peace mission as a civilian.  Since starting ARRSE Good CO has done an IT MSc in Germany, bummed around in Spain for a few years and finally in 2008 took the fairly major decision to run ARRSE / Olive Net full time and moved back to the UK.  A very narrow escape from a real job in Guetersloh.

Donations?

Donations of course help to pay wages and bills, but also we regularly donate your donations and this will be largely the case when paying for the development work mentioned above.

The software we use for the site (Dragonfly CMS) is free and was chosen for speed and security, but is a relatively small project run by enthusiasts, and funded by donations,  As one of the largest sites using the system we (ie. you!) are also major donor.
